Strange Stones
In the back yard at my old house there numerous, chiseled-out marble stones. Some of them were fairly large. The one shown here in the grass is actually what I believe to be a step. The reason I say this is due to there being a cobble stone walkway buried about 5 to 6 feet under the dirt. The way I came across this walk way was due to one of my older brother's jokes. He had an old horseshoe pit off on the far right (which you can not see here). When he stopped using the pit after a few years, he dug it further down about 2 or 3 feet deep, then put a large make-shift cross with my name on it at one end of the pit. Basically this made it look like a grave with the name Brian on it. Anyhow, my friend Peter and I saw a piece of metal sticking out of the dirt in the hole. We pulled at it and finally got it out. It was a piece of an old bike pedal. This sparked our curiosity, so we dug further down. While digging, we came across some small bones which looked very similar to finger bones, or at least we thought they did. This really creeped us out, but we needed to know what else was in the ground. Maybe they were chicken bones?? We came across another little group of these bones a little further off to the right. Some of them disintegrated after the shovel hit them. Strangely enough, these were the only type of bones we found in this location. There were plenty of pieces of old dishes and bottles along the way. Roughly about 5 or 6 feet down in the ground I struck something solid with the shovel. When we heard the loud thunk noise of the shovel hitting something solid, we froze and looked at each other nervously. As I scraped away the dirt with the shovel, I started to see a perfectly flat stone. To each side of it were similar flat stones spaced about a centimeter apart. They were organized somewhat like a puzzle. As we both started to use our hands to clear the dirt off these stones, we realized we hit a cobble stone walkway!
This is the step closer up.... or what I believe to be a step.
This is one of the big, flat marble stones that lie flush with the ground.
This is another of the large, flat marble stones (a bit under the fence).
This stone as right behind my mother's porch. It is smooth and polished on the top. The sides are chiseled. I went to the town library to see if I could look up the history of the house. I found out that stone cutters used to live here. That would explain all the weird stones (or sort of). I think they may have possibly made headstones for graves given the way some of the stones look. I think that may be the reason this stone was polished on top and chiseled on the sides.
These stones here I find to be the oddest of all. I have been really trying hard to figure out why they would be shaped this way. I have not tried to dig in this spot because my mother was not too happy with the hole we already dug in the yard. Notice the 3 weird notches on the right stone. If anyone knows or has an idea as to what these stones may have been used for, email me please. If you have a pictures of similar stones, I would like to see those too.
