The Unfinished Room
One dark night in the Summer of 1987, my friend Peter and I were playing Nintendo in the living room on the middle floor of the house. Since my mom went out, we could have the TV set all to ourselves. When walking down the hall towards the kitchen to get us some snacks, I heard an extremely loud screech noise coming from upstairs. The shrill sound lasted for about 3 seconds. Peter ran out of the living room and into the hall where I was and said "What the hell was that??". I looked up at the ceiling and told him the noise came from the bedroom directly above the living room. No one was staying in that room at the time due to it in being repainted. This also was the room where the most activity would take place. My first thought was that the noise sounded very similar to the old dresser in that room being pushed across the floor. It was a very heavy old antique and had small, wooden wheels which made a terrible squeal when being pushed. Either way, if it were a scream or the dresser being pushed..... it was enough to make anyone nervous. There was no one else in the house except for us that night. Peter, not believing in the paranormal at the time, decided to run upstairs. As he ran up the dimly lit stairs to see who was up there, I slowly followed him and said "Pete, no one is here. I don't think this is a good idea". Peter mentions that he thinks Bob, my mother's old boyfriend is probably playing a trick on us. I knew better because he went out to dinner with my mother before Peter came over. On the stairway there are no lights, so at the very top it is pitch black until you turn a light on in one of the rooms on each side. Peter ran into the room and flicked on the light switch and yelled "Ahhhhh!" trying to scare whoever may have been there. To his surprise he saw only the old dresser, a few drop cloths, a bunch of newspapers and some paint cans. Off to the right were the closed double sliding closet doors. I was outside of the room looking in at him and was only brave enough to step a few feet into it. The room was freezing and I had a very bad feeling we shouldn't be in it. Peter looked around the room then gave me an odd look (maybe he expected someone to be there). He then peered over to the closed closet next to the doorway and put his finger up to his mouth motioning me to be quiet. Slowly and quietly he walked up next to the sliding closet door closest to him, then put his finger into the door notch used to open it. Peter looked over at me and grinned, then pointed to the doors of the closet. By this time I started to feel extremely tense. So tense I felt light headed. Quickly sliding the door open he again yelled "Ahhhhh!" to try and scare anyone that may be hiding in the closet. His yelling made me jump and possibly caused my heart to skip a beat. Peter then said "Crap.. no one is there. Let's get the hell out of here". We ran quickly down the stairs and went straight outside the house. We sat on my front wall and talked about what had just happened. I knew Peter since I was 7 and have always told him about the strange things that would occur in the house. I think he somewhat believed me, but needed to have something happen to him personally. I think that night he really started to believe me.
