Ominous Shadows

Before I was 7 years old, I would often see an odd, person-shaped shadow moving about in our old house. This would have been fine if it were caused by a car driving by with it's headlights on, which would cause shadows to appear and move. However, this was not the case. When I slept in my tiny bedroom on the middle floor of the house, I would have my door open enough so I could hear my parents down the hall. This made me feel somewhat safe and provided me with a bit of comfort knowing my parents were nearby. My door was the type that opened inwards which allowed me to reach out and close it (if I leaned out far enough from my bed) if I chose to do so. When it was open, at night I could see a strip of light on the floor coming from the kitchen down the hall. When one of my parents would go to bed, I would see them reach into my room to close the door. I would always see their hand and part of their body when they closed the door, so it didn't bother me due to my knowing they went into their room next to mine. This too made me feel safe. I started to notice the odd shadow when I tried to go to sleep at night. In many cases I would see a shadow in the shape of a person move across my door and then into my room. This terrified me because I did not hear my parents walking down the hall when the shadow was entering the room. When the door would start to close, I did not see or hear my parents closing it. Once the shadow had entered my tiny room, I would literally see the door start to close by itself. Once it was in the room, it would start to get noticeably cold and I got an eerie feeling that I was not by myself anymore. When this activity was taking place, I could sometimes hear a slight, crackly noise like that of static electricity (similar to pulling freshly dried laundry out of a dryer). Once the door had fully closed, the room would be pitch black with the exception of a small slit of light at the bottom of the door. This had caused me to get into the habit tightly of pulling the covers over my head. When the covers were over my head, it somewhat made me feel a little bit safer since I could not look out into the darkness of my room. On numerous occasions, the bed would shake and sometimes the covers would get pulled right off of me.  I would try to scream, but was too terrified to do so for the thought that whatever was in the room may hurt me. The most I could get out was a whimper which I am sure my parents probably could not hear. If the covers were being pulled off of me, I would try to tightly pull them up over my head, but then give up so I would not make matters worse. When the covers were pulled off of me, I would curl up into a ball and feel helpless and scared. After this happening numerous times, I started to get into a pattern of rolling off the bed, then onto the floor. Once on the floor, I would roll under the bed next to a radiator pipe which was up against the wall. Strangely enough, I felt a lot safer under the bed. The pipe would make pinging, clicking and whooshing noises which would drown out the other weird noises that occurred in the darkness. In the Summer time I was not so lucky due to the heat being off. I told my parents about what was happening in my small room, but they told me there was nothing to worry about. These nerve racking situations caused me to be quite the tired little kid and I always seemed to have baggy eyes. This probably lasted for about a year or two, but then stopped once my Dad started to share a bunk bed with me (my parents were in the process of getting divorced). When I was a little older, I ended up sharing the same bunk bed with my brother in the front room on the top floor.  Things were not as bad at that point since I was not always in the room alone. However, that changed when my brother moved out. Little did I know that upstairs would be much worse than my little old room on the middle floor. You'll hear more about that in the other stories from the house.
